How to Reduce Kerosene Use
- 1). Insulate your home to make sure that any heat produced by the kerosene is kept inside the house. You can use spray foam or batt insulation in attics, walls and crawlspaces, add plastic or thick curtains to windows, seal doors and window casings with caulk and apply weather stripping around exterior doors to keep warm air inside.
- 2). Close the doors in the room where you use kerosene, to contain the heat to a smaller space. If you are only using one room of the house, there is no need to keep the rest of the house unnecessarily warm.
- 3). Turn off all heaters when you aren't in the room or when you leave the house for the day. This will not only reduce the amount of kerosene you use, but it will also decrease the risk of fire.
- 4). Wear an extra layer of clothing and warm socks around the house so your home doesn't require a high temperature to be comfortable.
- 5). Use kerosene as a supplemental heat source so you don't need as much fuel to heat the entire home. If you are also heating with electricity, you won't need to burn as much kerosene in your heaters.
