North Carolina's High Country holds three premier ski resorts within thirty miles near the towns of Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and Boone. Each resort offers skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing and tubing on the tallest slopes east of the Rockies.
The entire High Country ski area is served by three airports: Hickory Regional, Charlotte Douglas International and the Tri-Cities Regional Airport near Blountville, Tennessee. - Appalachian Ski Mountain has operated since 1962 near Boone, North Carolina, offering eleven slopes with double and quad chairlifts, conveyor lifts and hand-pull lifts. The family-friendly resort includes nursery facilities for infants ages 1 to 4, junior rentals, classes and a trail network easily viewed from spacious decks outside the main lodge.
The Bavarian-style lodge includes a restaurant, ski shop and gift shop. Equipment rental facilities offer name brand gear and helmets. Group and private ski lessons are available for all ages. An outdoor ice arena offers daily skating lessons.
The resort opens for skiing on the Friday before Thanksgiving and runs seven days a week through early April.

There are fifteen downhill trails available for night skiing and ten lifts including the only high-speed quad lift in the state.
The resort's alpine village holds restaurants and cafeterias, rental and gift shops, a learning center and equipment repair facilities. A 7,000 square-foot outdoor skating rink is located in the village center. A free sledding hill is open to children aged 12 and under. There are 650 ski chalets on and around the resort and multiple lodges within the village area.

The base lodge and parking is located at highway level, making for easy access during difficult weather. The resort offers twenty trails and slopes serviced by double and triple lifts.
The resort specializes in services for novice skiers. Beginner slopes are segregated from the general ski area and an "Easy Street" lift is designed for new enthusiasts anxious about chairlifts.
Facilities include snowshoeing trails, a snowboarding-only park, 700-foot tubing park and a 10,000-square-foot outdoor skating rink. The lodge offers ski and snowboard rentals, a lounge, cafeterias, lockers, sports shop and gift shops.
