Disability Compensation

• Disability compensation is a VA benefit paid to veterans who incur injuries or illnesses due to military service or who have an injury or illness that is worsened by military service. To be eligible for disability compensation, you must have a service-related disability and you cannot have been discharged from the military under dishonorable conditions, according to the VA. The amount of compensation for which you are eligible is based on the severity of the disability and other factors.
  
  

Disability Pension

• The VA runs a pension program that provides additional compensation to aged or disabled wartime veterans. To be eligible for a VA pension, you must have served 90 days of active military duty and at least one day during a wartime period. In addition, you must be age 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled, and your income cannot exceed certain minimum levels. As of 2010, your income must be less than $11,830 for single veterans and $15,493 for veterans with one dependent to be eligible.
  
  

Adapted Housing Grants

• Disabled veterans may be eligible for an adapted housing grant from the VA to pay for home improvements made to accommodate special needs. According to the VA, you must have a service-connected disability to be eligible for a grant; the program can provide up to $14,000 that you do not have to repay.
  
  

Automobile and Equipment Grants

• The VA offers grants to disabled veterans to pay for costs related to adapting automobiles or equipment. In order to be eligible, you must have permanently lost the use of one or both hands or one or both feet, or have a permanent impairment of vision in both eyes.
