Beat Juggling

• Beat juggling is the most important part of turntablism. This is the technique of taking two separate tracks and layering them together to form an entirely new sound. To achieve this technique, one track is usually looped as a beat, and another track (usually longer) is set at the same BPM (beats per minute) as the looped beat and played with it. Some artists have even gone as far as creating mash-ups of two full-length songs played in unison without using loops.
  
  

Scratching

• Scratching is a sound wholly unique to a turntablist performance. The technique requires the DJ to actually move the playing record with one hand while simultaneously manipulating a crossfader with the other. If performed with rhythm and control, it will result in a "scratchy," squealing effect. There are a few different styles of scratch, such as the tear, baby, chirp, transformer, flare, crab and orbit.
  
  

Beatmatching

• Usually as a part of beat juggling, a DJ must perform beatmatching in order to keep all of the tracks' BPMs at the same rate. By pitch-shifting and time-stretching one track to the same tempo as another, the music can flow together at a constant rate. This is accomplished by changing the speed at which the record spins. Beatmatching is essential to keeping one consistent beat during a DJ performance.
