- 1). Assess your needs to determine the sort of adjustments you will need to make in order to make your car accessible. Each person will have different needs based on his abilities and limitations. If you need help assessing your needs, make an appointment with an occupational therapist or a rehabilitative driving specialist.
- 2). Install, or have installed, hand controls you can use to operate the accelerator and brake on your car if you cannot operate these with your feet.
- 3). Install, or have installed, extended foot pedals if you can operate the accelerator and brake with your feet but cannot reach the standard pedals.
- 4). Install, or have installed, modified controls for things like headlights, turn signals, climate control features and other accessories as needed. A variety of modified controls exist for those with limited fine motor control or other special needs and they can be mounted in various locations depending on your needs.
- 5). Install, or have installed, special mirrors if needed in order to help you clearly see cars and other objects beside and behind your car.
- 6). Install, or have installed, a special seat if necessary to help you get in and out of the car. You can purchase seats that swivel, making it easier to enter and exit the vehicle. You can also purchase seats that provide added support when sitting.
- 7). Make, or have made, any other accommodations needed in order to make your car safe and easy for you to drive.
