How to Find an OB/GYN
- 1). Search your insurance company's provider directory for OB/GYN practitioners in your area to creat a short list. If you have Medicaid for Pregnant Women you may need to call offices to ask if they accept Medicaid patients. If you will be self-pay, research the OB/GYN's billing practices and ask if they offer any discounts.
- 2). Narrow down your short list by finding out the hospital at which each OB/GYN delivers babies. If you have specific preferences regarding teaching hospitals or driving distance from your home, this is a crucial step.
- 3). Call the OB/GYN office to see if you can schedule an interview with specific doctors or if there's a new patient presentation regularly hosted.
- 4). Get references from friends and family members for specific doctors in the practices you have on your list. You will be able to learn about personality, bedside manner, and whether the OB/GYN is willing to adapt to your medical preferences, such as natural childbirth, progressing beyond 40-weeks gestation, etc.
- 5). Search the Internet for the names of prospective OB/GYNs. You may learn what sort of papers the doctor has written, research she's contributed to, her sub-specialties or areas of interest, and perhaps even reviews from people who have had poor experiences with her.
