Scott McKenzie: 1939-2012
Are you going to San Francisco?
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. The late John Phillips (The Mamas & the Papas) wrote it. Scott McKenzie recorded it, and in so doing made it the official anthem of the Summer of Love, the San Francisco-centered peace-love-rock and roll-flower power movement. McKenzie died Saturday (8/18) in Los Angeles. He was 73.McKenzie and Phillips were both members of The Journeymen in the early '60s.
When they disbanded shortly after The Beatles invaded from Britain, Phillips went on to be part of forming The Mamas and the Papas, and invited his band mate to be a part of it. McKenzie opted instead for a solo career, recording two albums before leaving the music business in the early '70s, then returning in 1986 to perform with a new version of The Mamas and the Papas. He retired for good in 1998 and moved to Los Angeles, where he lived until his death.Video: Scott McKenzie's performance of "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival
