How to Make a Basket Out of Origami Paper
- 1). Fold one square of paper in half top to bottom. Crease well and unfold. Fold it again left to right. Crease well and unfold. Fold it again bringing one corner to the opposite corner, forming a triangle. Crease and unfold. Fold it again using the other two opposite corners. Crease and unfold. You have a square sheet of paper with an eight-rayed crease pattern.
- 2). Turn the paper colored side up, if there is one, and fold the diagonal creases so that the crease is at the bottom of the fold and creates a V shape. This is called a valley fold. Unfold the paper slightly. Fold the other creases so that the crease is at the top of the fold, which is called a mountain fold. Unfold the paper slightly.
- 3). Stand the paper on the table. It should stand up on its four corners. Collapse it along the folds into a small square with two opposite valley folds meeting in the middle inside. Press it flat. It should now be a small square with a crease bisecting it into triangles.
- 4). Lay the square flat and point the corner with the flaps open away from you. It will appear diamond-shaped. Pick up the top layer of the top point and fold it down to line up with the bottom point of the diamond. This creates a fold horizontally through the middle of the diamond from left point to right point. Grasp the same flap you just folded down and fold it up to the middle of the horizontal fold, creating a small triangle in the middle of the diamond. Repeat this procedure on the other side of the diamond so that there is a small triangle inside that diamond as well. Set the diamond aside for now.
- 5). Make the handle strip of the basket from the other sheet of paper. Fold it in half left to right, crease and unfold. Now you have a square with a vertical crease that bisects the square. Fold the left edge in to line up with the center crease. Repeat for the right side. The side flaps should meet in the middle. Now fold the left edge in to line up with the center crease again. Repeat for the right side. Lastly, fold it in half lengthwise along the crease. You should now have a long rectangle. Fold all this in half top to bottom, crease and unfold.
- 6). Center one end of the handle strip you made in the previous step into the triangle you made in one side of the diamond in Step 4. Fold the bottom edge of the triangle up to line up with the center horizontal crease, folding the end of the handle strip along with it. Repeat for the other side and the other end of the handle strip.
- 7). With the handle strip's fold at the top of the diamond, fold the top layer of the left corner under toward the middle of the diamond. Repeat for the right corner. Turn the model over and repeat for the right and left corners on the other side.
- 8). Make sure there are two flaps that meet in a split under the handle strip. Fold the left flap down so that its apex meets the point at the bottom of the model, creasing it so that it nestles into the creases in the bottom half. Repeat for the flap on the right side under the handle strip. Now the handle sticks up alone above a pentagon shape that looks like an upside-down house.
- 9). Separate the sides of the handle strip and begin to expand the basket. Gently push up on the bottom point of the model until the bottom becomes flat. The bottom point becomes the middle of the flat bottom. You will have to crease the bottom edges of the basket slightly. The two flaps you folded down in Step 8 will be sticking out to the sides.
- 10
Fold the two side flaps into the bottom of the basket, creasing them so they conform to the sides and bottom. They will form two opposing triangular flaps on the bottom inside the basket. Round the handle slightly and your basket is done.
