How to Install Premade Shower Pans
- 1). Place the premade shower pan inside the shower floor, and make sure that the its front is flat on the subfloor. If the pan sits on the existing bathroom floor, trace around the front edge of the pan with a dry-erase marker, and then remove the shower pan. Cut out any linoleum with a utility knife, or chip away tiles with a chisel and hammer.
- 2). Place a level on the existing subfloor to be sure it is perfectly even. If any low areas exist, place a wooden shim under the level until you achieve the proper height. Secure the shim to the floor, using wood screws for a wooden subfloor and masonry screws for a concrete subfloor.
- 3). Unscrew the bottom gasket from the new drain. Insert the top part of the drain, which has a rubber seal, through the top of the shower pan, and screw the gasket onto the bottom of the drain. Tighten the gasket with a wrench to ensure a waterproof seal.
- 4). Set the shower pan back in position on the shower floor. Insert a 1/4-inch drill bit into a drill and create 1-inch-deep pilot holes in the upper lip of the pan at the locations of the wall studs.
- 5). Insert 1-inch-long galvanized screws into each pilot hole, using a power drill, until they are tight.
- 6). Look through the drain in the pan and push a black neoprene gasket, supplied with the drain, around the outside of the PVC pipe. Use a screwdriver to push it down at least 1/4 inch below the top rim of the pipe.
- 7). Screw the adapter ring of the drain down as far as possible to compress the neoprene washer. The adapter has a flat tool that is supplied and allows you to tighten it. Next, install the strainer by either gluing it down with waterproof construction adhesive or screwing it down, depending on the model.
