What Are the Causes of Cervical Hemangioma?

1

    Cause

    • A cervical hemangioma is caused by an abnormal buildup of blood vessels in the uterine cervix. In most cases, patients are born with the condition, or develop it shortly after birth.

As of 2010, it is not known what causes this buildup, however it is thought that the consumption of oral contraceptives or steroids may accelerate the growth of an already existing hemangioma.

    Symptoms

    • Vaginal and post-coital bleeding may indicate the presence of a cervical hemangioma. However, most woman suffering from this condition do not show any signs or symptoms. A hemangioma is typically found during a physical exam.

    Treatment

    • Depending on the severity, a cervical hemangioma may be surgical removed or reduced in size through laser treatment. As a cervical hemangioma is a benign tumor, treatment is only necessary if the hemangioma becomes problematic.

In most cases, a hemangioma will go away on its own. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine 50 percent of all hemangiomas disappear by the age of five and 90 percent are gone by the age of nine.
