  A cool, relaxing garden is the result when you choose white plants that grow in shade. Most plants grow better with some sun, but you can find white groundcovers, flowers and shrubs that thrive in deep, light or dappled shade. Choose plants based on the USDA hardiness zone for your areas, and group plants with similar shade, water and soil needs.
  
  

Azalea

• Azaleas offer many choices for white shade gardens. Depending on the variety, azaleas bloom between late winter and midsummer. You can choose from small flowering groundcovers to shrubs that are more than 15 feet tall. White Kurume hybrids, "Snow," and "Delaware Valley White" grow well in deep shade in USDA zones 6 to 9 and bloom in mid-spring. Azaleas like regular water in well-drained soil.
  
  

Begonia

• Begonias bloom from late spring through summer. Grow them in light shade for best results. "Thousand Wonders" and "Viva" are white-flowered varieties with green foliage. "Whiskey" has pure-white blossoms and bronze leaves. Begonias like average moisture in well-drained soil and are hardy in zone 10.
  
  

Camellia

• Camellias will bloom in the shade between winter and spring with flowers that vary in size from 2- to 5-inches wide. White-flowering varieties of Camellia japonica include "Nuccio's Gem," with medium to large double blossoms, and "Silver Waves," whose blooms have bright-yellow centers. This evergreen shrub grows up to 12 feet tall and prefers well-drained, moist soil. It is hardy through zone 7b.
  
  

Cat Whiskers

• Cat Whiskers, Orthosiphon staminens, is a showy flower that performs well in partial shade. It blooms almost year-round in zones 9 to 11, bearing flowers with long stamens like cat whiskers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant grows up to 3 feet tall and prefers well-drained soil with moderate water.
  
  

Gardenia

• Gardenia augusta "Veitchii," also known as "everblooming gardenia," brings fragrance and almost constant bloom to the garden from spring through fall. Its glossy green leaves set off the pure-white flowers. Plant "Veitchii" in fast-draining soil in partial shade. It grows to 4 feet high and 6 feet wide.
  
  

Primrose

• Booth's evening primrose, Camissonia boothii, flowers in early spring with soft-white, multiple flower clusters. This primose flourishes in shade in zones 4 to 8. It requires well-drained soil and regular watering.
