What Can I Do if a Company Does Not Send Me a W-2?
- Contact your employer and find out if the W-2 has been mailed. If the W-2 has been sent and you haven't received it, then you can request a duplicate copy. Make sure the employer has your current address.
- If you cannot reach the employer and you don't receive the W-2 by Feb. 14, then you can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040. Provide the following information: employer's name, phone number and address; your name, phone number, address and Social Security number; and the dates you worked for the employer. You will also need an estimate of the wages you earned at the company and how much federal income tax was withheld for that tax year. You can estimate both of these figures using the information from your last pay statement. Once the IRS has this information, it will work with you in contacting your employer to obtain the missing W-2.
- Even if you don't receive a W-2, you still have to file your taxes or file for an extension before the due date. Use IRS Form 4852, which is a substitute for Form W-2, if you don't have a W-2 and you've called the IRS an it has not be able to track down your W-2. Complete this form by estimating your income and tax withholdings, and attache it to your return. Your tax refund may be delayed while the IRS verifies the information on Form 4852.
- If you've filed a return with Form 4852 and receive a W-2 with information that doesn't match, then you must file Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, with the correct information.
