How to Remove a Frost Free Valve Stem

18
    • 1). Locate the water supply shut off valve for the frost free faucet. This may be in a basement, crawl space or outside the building. Rotate the water supply valve clockwise to turn off the water. If no separate water supply valve is present, you will have to turn off the water for the entire house. Do this at the main water shut off valve, which is usually located next to the water meter.

    • 2). Clean off any dirt or debris around the frost free faucet with the rag and brush. This will help you identify the valve stem and prevent the wrench from slipping.

    • 3). Adjust the wrench so it fits tightly around the hexagonal nut at the base of the faucet. This is the valve stem. Spray penetrating lubricant on the stem and allow it to soak for a few minutes.

    • 4). Unscrew the frost free valve stem by rotating the wrench counterclockwise. Do this gently, as twisting too hard may damage both the stem and the water pipe.

    • 5). Pull the stem out of the faucet to remove. Be careful not to bend the long part of the stem that holds the faucet washer.
