Emotional Freedom Techniques for Word blindness: Part 2
In Part 1 of this series, Dyslexia was defined as a state that shows up in the brain. Emotional freedom techniques was used in the first meeting with Tricia to focus on the sequencing issues people with word blindness face.Tricia and I worked through two specific situations that occurred in school, both concerning her ordering difficulties. By the conclusion of the Meridian tapping rounds, Tricia found that she was able to remember long lists in the accurately and that her relationship with her brother had dramatically improved.
The following meeting focused on her time in the womb.Since the research shows that Word blindness is a cognitive question, it seemed sensible to deal with the experience inside the womb.
To this end, Tricia was directed to shut her eyes and imagine what it felt like in the womb. Tricia indicated she was equally "really comfortable" and "uneasy" at the same time. While we were tapping on the disquiet, Tricia added in that she was also feeling stressed. It's essential that when the client modifies the wording of the reminder phrases, the practitioner goes with her. This is in the spirit of doing EFT "through me rather than by me".
It was so fascinating that only when Tricia was visualising herself in the womb that she felt any of the emotions we tapped on. Checking in with her when her eyes were open during our discussions, she was clearly not in the same emotional space.
There were quite a few emotions to deal with - Tricia's mother had had a miscarriage before Tricia and had been stressed and fearful of losing another baby throughout the pregnancy. Some humour was introduced at this point with the thought of "Even though my mummy is sending me unpleasant hormones, I'm sending my own right back!".
Then a book was chosen at random and Tricia was requested to read a passage out loud. She was asked to indicate on a scale of zero to ten how comfortable she was doing this, with zero being not comfortable at all and 10 being very at ease. Most people with word blindness experience print as "dancing", but Tricia was amazed. The words weren't in motion any more!. However, she indicated that they were still raised off the page and in 3D.The client then indicated on the scale described above that she felt about a 7 level of comfort. The next round focused on anchoring her mind's eye just above and behind her head. On being asked to read another passage she was astonished to find the print flat and unmoving on the page.
Some time later, Tricia said she still had no trouble reading unless she was tired.
Several months later on, Tricia is still reporting that she is able to understand writing easily - print stays where it is and remains flat on the page.
