Juvenile Justice & Deliquency Prevention
- In 2006, 1,043 homicides were committed by juveniles. This is nearly 10 percent of all homicides in the year. Other serious violent crimes committed by juveniles have decreased since 1986. Rape, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults and robbery are considered serious violent crimes.
- The OJJDP has developed programs to work with at-risk youth, juvenile offenders and prevention programs. A few of the programs involve mental health, tribal youth, gang reduction, minority contact, study groups for girls and juvenile accountability.
- There are three manners for transfer to criminal (adult) court: judicial waiver, statutory exclusion and concurrent jurisdiction (OJJDP). All states have developed provisions to try juveniles in adult court.
- Probation is used by the juvenile justice system to monitor at-risk and diverting first-time offenders from the court system. Probation is ordered approximately 58 percent of the time in delinquency cases. Residential facilities and detention facilities are used in the beginning of the offense and during court.
- Youths can thrive after release if services for after care are accessible. This will decrease the likelihood of additional criminal activity.
