The Bengalese finch or the Society Finch as it is known in the United States is a very popular; though not a naturally occurring species, that will make a wonderful pet for any bird enthusiast.
This bird is a hybrid raised in captivity.
They are believed to have been developed in Asia over three hundred years ago by Japanese and Chinese breeders.
The ancestry of the Society Finch is uncertain, no one is quite certain which wild finches the Bengalese is descended from.
The Striated Finch and the White-rumped Munia are thought to have played a role in their development.
They are well adapted to captivity and do well in the company of humans.
Society Finches reach about 4 ¼ inches to 4 ¾ inches in size.
No two Society Finches look alike.
They come in may color varieties: Chestnut, fawn, fawn and white, chocolate pied, fawn pied, chocolate gray, pearly gray and white to name a few.
There are also tri-colored, solid colored and crested forms.
They have wonderful cheerful personalities and are very easy to look after.
They will readily breed as long as they are provided with good nutrition, roomy housing and a stress free environment.
These finches look exactly alike so they can be a little hard to sex.
However gender is easy to identify by their behavior.
When it comes to breeding, it can be harder to get these birds to stop breeding rather than to get them started.
They are so social that they can hinder breeding if they are breeding in an area with more than just one breeding pair.
It would be best to separate the breeding pairs into their own breeding cages.
If you do decide to breed them in groups, make sure you have more than three pairs to prevent a pecking order.
The Society Finch is such a wonderful parent and so social that it is often used to foster many other species of estrildids.
They will readily take over for parents that abandon their nests.
As always, be sure to provide your finches with a healthy diet with extra protein and calcium when they are breeding.
Society Finches are great for people who enjoy watching birds rather than a demanding bird that needs lots of attention.
These little birds are known for their ability to get along well with other finches species.
They do wonderful in aviaries or large flight cages along with other, non-aggressive birds.
