Russell Square is located in Bloomsbury, at the hub of London life. There are many hotels and hostels in the area ranging from expensive to affordable. As the area is very close to major theaters, tourist attractions, fine restaurants and pubs, you won't be spending much money on black cabs, nor thinking about missing the last tube back to the hotel. The area is known for the "Bloomsbury Group," a group of writers and artists, which included, Charles Dickens, George Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin who held informal discussions in the 20th century. The University of London also is located here and its many campuses scattered along the streets. - Originally built as three separate dwellings by master architect James Burton in 1807, the hotel buildings were owned by a couple of well-known historical figures. The rooms are all en suite which include a color television, tea and coffee making facilities, direct-dial telephone and hair dryer.
