Ways to Be Safe on the Street
- Create a plan if something bad happens. Bring a whistle to call for help in case a stranger attempts to attack you. Carry a cell phone with you and tell a family member where you went. Find places in the area that are open late and know how to contact the police if you are in trouble.
- Arrange to take a taxi home if you go to a bar or club to drink alcohol. Driving under the influence puts yourself and others in danger. Walking home isn't wise either because alcohol lowers your inhibitions and can cause you to get hurt.
- Hold your purse tightly to your body. If you don't pay attention to how you carry your purse, you put yourself at risk of someone taking it. Don't carry too many valuable items in your purse, such as cash, credit cards or jewelry.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Walk in areas that are well-lit and populated. Avoid walking in alleys and parks by yourself at night because you put yourself at risk of being attacked by a stranger. If you sense that you are in a dangerous area, leave immediately.
- Avoid wearing revealing or bright clothing and flashy jewelry. Dress more conservatively, so you don't draw attention to yourself. Opt to wear comfortable shoes, instead of high heels, so you can run away from a potentially dangerous situation.
- Don't trust strangers. If a person in a car asks you for directions, keep your distance from the vehicle. Be wary if you notice someone following you. Walk in a different direction or go in a restaurant or store to ask for help. Never accept a ride from someone, no matter how harmless he seems.
