Calgary Begins Recycling Program

55
Calgary recently became the last major city in Canada to begin offering a curbside recycling program.
Residents used to have to deliver recyclables to huge green bins that were placed every few blocks and overflowed often, or they were forced to pay $10 a month for curbside pickup.
The city recently passed a $50 million plan, which also includes another $50 million in taxes on the homeowners.
The blue box recycling program is part of the city's plan to divert more than 80% of its waste from landfills by 2020.
Even before the program began, Calgary was diverting about 20% of its trash away from landfills through private organizations.
The program will make citizens of Calgary feel like they are helping the planet by conveniently recycling most household materials.
Unfortunately, glass collected by the program so far is settling in the city landfill due to lack of a buyer.
The cost of glass is just so cheap that it just isn't economical to recycle it.
The process is energy intensive, so it does not make a lot of sense at the moment.
Considering if recycling certain products is worth the cost recycle is a major struggle many cities face at the present moment.
The problem is that most cities simply want to turn a profit instead of actually help the environment.
Some say that if the product is worth much less after it is recycled that the process is not worth the cost, but they seem to forget that the point of recycling is to cut down on the waste the earth was deal with.
That is the cost, the price to keep the planet clean.
