Schedule

• The time a child spends with each parent is designated by a court-approved parenting plan. Schedules vary based on the family's specific situation and what the court determines is in the best interest of the child. Each parent may have physical custody of the child for one half of the week or may alternate week by week.

• A custody arrangement in which one parent has primary custody of the child requires payment of child support to the custodial parent. In 50/50 custody arrangements where custody is equally shared, the parent who earns the most income may be required to pay support depending on state law.
  
  

Considerations

• In order for a 50/50 custody arrangement to be successful, parents must be able to communicate openly and effectively with each other regarding all aspects of the child's life. It is also important that each household maintain as many similarities as possible in regards to lifestyle, schedules and discipline.
