Even if the population of both cities of Chennai and Mumbai are growing rapidly Doctors in Chennai and Doctors in Mumbai does not match the exponential growth of people are the ratio of doctors to patients is heavily skewed. More so among the doctors in Chennai and Doctors in Mumbai the family physician or general physician population is dwindling or rapidly vanishing. People from both the cities say that most doctors now opt for specialization and hence these time-bound general physicians are usually on duty in the major hospitals and nursing homes and give a miss to the smaller clinics and residential chamber.
The people in both the cities said that even for smaller complaints like gas or fever or small bruises they have to rush to hospitals as availability of local doctors is very scarce. In case of emergencies generally people tend to search and look for local doctors but they are hard to find these days.
Another important factor that effects the checkups are prices of seeing a doctor. Whereas common diseases could have taken anywhere between Rs 300- Rs 500/- in hospitals it could take anywhere between Rs 2000- Rs 3000/- even for smaller treatments.
Another thing is that not all rich live in the city and the doctor's practice being no longer available have hit the poor very much in the city and they are at a loss about what to do.
The Doctors in Chennai and Doctors in Mumbai now prefer larger hospitals to sit where they can charge higher fees and also the hospital adds a certain service charge.
Reports are that even from sme people spending in excess of Rs 50,000/-even taking loans, just to get herself treated for a simple urinary infection at multi-specialty hospital.
In many cases the house helps have to reply on their owners to pay their Medical bills as they are too poor to even pay for such exorbitant prices of Hospital admission and other medicine cost.
