Gay Rights and Financial Obstacles 7

1
For some unexplainable reason many people have the idea that gay folk are always rich or part of the upper-class.
Just like it is with all other stereotypes, this one is also not based on reality.
The community of gay people are a perfect example of the fact that it takes all types.
In fact according to Lee Badgett, professor of economics and director at The Williams Institute linked to the UCLA Law School, their research found that gay Americans are more likely to be poor than heterosexuals.
There may be many reasons for this, but one that stands out is the fact that gay couples aren't accepted by the government in many states.
That means that certain benefits for poor people just aren't available for LGBT couples.
Ironically the straight population do not take this serious because in their mind all homosexual people are rich.
Another reason is the fact that there aren't any federal laws that protect gay people against discrimination.
Only 21 states have laws against discrimination of the LGBT community.
Gay men and woman can lose their jobs because of discrimination and in most states there is nothing that protects them from this.
Obviously those who can not be protected will lose their jobs far easier and that explains the poverty.
The fact that gay people can not get married also plays a role.
The law works within a framework in which married couples are helped financially in order to support children.
If you can't get married you do not qualify for this support.
This places gay couples with kids in a worse situation than their heterosexual peers.
On the other hand some straight homophobes grabbed the information here above to prove that gay people have an ulterior motive for getting married.
They state that gay people just want to get married in order to reap the financial benefits.
That is a bit ironical if you think about it.
The argument clearly agree that gay people are financially worse off and then goes further by suggesting that gay people should not have the same rights as straight people where financial benefits are concerned.
The sad truth is that the whole anti-same-sex marriage campaign is based on theories, dogmas, and philosophies while children with same-sex parents are the ones who suffer.
It should be clear through the above that gay rights also stumble financially.
Money is another obstacle for being gay and this time there are no moral to defend this kind of discrimination.
As an example I used the financial benefits as practiced in the US, but it looks the same in most other countries.
