If you are thinking in terms of launching a blog to support your business, then it must be designed carefully. You can hire a professional blog designer who will surely take care of your concerns. But your own basic knowledge about what should go in the blog and how it should look to the users comes handy to guide the designers.
Here are some key points to consider when designing your blog

1. Convert visitors to customers

Your goal in creating a blog should be to convert its visitors into the potential customers. For this, you need to direct the visitors towards your call to action button. You must be using a visual hierarchy that leads the viewers to taking some action in buying your products or services.
So, make sure that your blog has headlines that end in call to action. You should put this headline to the places on the pages where people can see it quickly. Such places are at the top of sidebar, homepage, bottom of posts etc.

2. Use not more than 2-3 Fonts

You should avoid using a wide range of fonts on your blog pages. This creates confusion and distraction for the viewers and makes the blog look messy.
It is better to use one font for headlines and another for body text so that both the content can be viewed quickly.

3. Use not more than2-3 Colors

Many colors will turn your blog into a clown. So, unless you are running a blog for children, avoid using more than two to three colors. Select the colors that your website, business cards, logo etc have already incorporated in marketing campaign.
Make sure that color for call to action is different. Your blog should have a primary color, a shade of grey, and a call to action color. There should be a careful selection of primary colors and grey/black and shades.
Bright orange is good to draw attention.

4. Use of Shadows and Textures

Avoid excessive use of shadows and textures in your blog design. Less makeup is better for a sophisticated and focused blog.
You should make the shadows look subtle so that they cannot be found on the beg pages easily. The viewers are looking at them subconsciously and still the shadows and textures are not visible.
So, it is only when the viewers want to takes a closure look that the texture can be noticed in the background and shadow in the logo and headline or buttons.

5. Clever use of white space

When visitors scan your blog pages, they should not be straining their eyes or they will run away. So, there should be lots of white space in between the text and at the sides of the pages. White space is also a good way to eliminate everything that is not related to your goals in creating a blog.
Use white space also to avoid the elements that are a distraction.

6. Use subheads to break content

A blog should provide information in such manner that readers can grasp it easily as it helps in better communication. Use subheads to break your content. Coupled with short body copy, use of subhead hierarchies is helpful in easy scanning of pages downwards.
Subheads also are a way to scan the blog pages and the readers can consume the content easily.
