How to Troubleshoot Defragmenter Problems

20
    • 1). Shut down all programs you have open on screen before attempting to use Disk Defragmenter. This is important for two reasons. Any other open programs could leave Disk Defragmenter with not enough system memory to operate properly. Secondly, any open programs will prevent Disk Defragmenter from being able to rearrange all of the data on your computer, which will prevent it from being able to work properly.

    • 2). Close any files you have accessed. This mainly applies to any music files you may be playing or image files you may be viewing. Disk Defragmenter needs to be able to access all data on your hard drive in order to perform its duties. If you have files that are being accessed, Disk Defragmenter will not be able to move them and will perform an incomplete defragmentation of your hard drive.

    • 3). Click the "Analyze" button before attempting to defragment a hard drive. If you find that Disk Defragmenter is taking an abnormally long time to complete, stop the process and click "Analyze." Disk Defragmenter will then quickly look at the drive and determine exactly what files are fragmented (meaning which files need to be moved). This will save a lot of time and Disk Defragmenter won't have to attempt to move all of the data on your hard drive.
