Dirty Dave Meets Killer Kirstie
David Letterman is a funny guy€"when his writers are funny. It doesn't much matter, though. When he and they are not, Dave's braindead audience laughs anyway since they're supposed to.
He was hilarious when he suggested Sarah Palin was a slut, that then-14 year old Willow Palin had sexual intercourse with A-Rod out in Yankee Stadium right field, not so funny when he was forced to admit an extended, extra-marital affair with young €Late Show€ intern Stephanie Birkitt or after his cracks about the Palins hit the fan and he was compelled to render a pro-forma, on-air apology to them.
Whether he apologized to his long-term live-in mistress, Regina Lasko, whom he finally married a few years following the birth of his son, is not known.
One of his prime targets in the last few years has been Kirstie Alley and her weight struggle, telling joke after joke about her with impunity and a frequency almost as great as his riffs on Republicans and the Republican Party.
Long a butt of Dave's ridicule, safely delivered from afar, Alley is no tolerant, long-suffering mistress. She surprisingly finished as runner-up on €Dancing With the Stars,€ appearances which furnished unlimited fodder for Letterman's writers to make fat jokes but those yuks didn't dissuade her from focusing both barrels on Letterman Thursday night.
As he claimed last night, she had once said, €It was okay€ to make fun of her and her extra poundage so he felt he had carte blanche to relentlessly mock Alley. She asked, €I said it was okay, so that was like go ahead and make 50 of them?€
Evidently, it was not. See the one-minute clip of the Alley-Letterman contretemps.
Letterman and his writers knew full well that what Dave termed Alley's €tacit approval€ didn't mean she enjoyed being his personal pi±ata anymore than his latest GOP target of ridicule, Rep. Michelle Bachmann, gave her consent for repetitive ridicule by virtue of being a candidate for president.
In typical Letterman fashion, not only does the Democrat hatchet man rip Bachmann nightly but he demonstrates his veiled contempt by refusing even to get her name right as over and over he refers to her as €O'Bachmann.€ It's hard to tell with Dave since he's so often partisanly inane but he is seemingly alluding to former target, 2010 Delaware senatorial candidate, Christine O'Donnell, a conservative woman as is Sarah Palin.
Letterman's lame retort to Alley€"sans writer input, tantamount to his hero, President Obama speaking without his teleprompters€"€We do love you and if you were skinny we would tell jokes about you€"No, probably not,€ was a vicious rejoinder implying Alley was laughable fat or thin but more laughable when she is heavy. Unlike Bachmann and other GOPers he abuses, Alley at least was afforded the opportunity to confront Dirty Dave.
What's most remarkable about David Letterman who is most unremarkable as a comedian-talk show host is that he has gotten away with all he has.
He eventually emerged unscathed after his misogynistic attacks on the Palin family and his borderline- pedophilia comments about Willow Palin. His affairs with an intern and others evoked no charges that he took advantage of female employees. His constant ridicule of, primarily, Republican women brought no accusations of €sexist pig€ from the National Organization of Women.
It must be nice to be Les Moonves' CBS meal ticket.
