Why Won"t My Dog Stay Home Without Barking and Whining?

15
Your neighbors are fed up! They have called several times to let you know that your dog has barked and whined most of the day while you were gone.
You are at your wit's end.
What's going on when your dog will not remain quiet when you leave him at home? Most dog owners are anxious to teach their dogs tricks that amuse the crowds.
But if you have a dog that has separation anxiety, you would do anything if you could just teach your dog to stay alone and actually like it.
The dog or puppy that goes into a tantrum when left alone, and barks and whines until all the neighbors are up in arms, invariably is a product of his routine at home.
Usually, the whole family is so devoted to the pet that he has his way most of the time.
He is talked to, played with and the family gives him their full and complete attention whenever they are at home.
When it is time to go to the store, the pup travels along.
When it is time to take the kids to school, this dog goes along for the ride.
Practically every minute of his day the dog is taught to expect attention and human company.
So one night, the family decides to go to a movie, and they leave the pup in the kitchen with the command, "Now you be a good dog!" As soon as he realizes he is alone and no one is around to dote on him, he proceeds to make as much noise as ten dogs to protest the fact that he has been abandoned.
You really can't blame the dog for his awful behavior because no one in this household has taken the time to train him.
No one has demanded obedience of this animal.
He must be taught that he cannot have his way all the time.
He has to learn that the people in his home are his pack leaders.
He must be trained to obey your commands without question.
Without training that teaches him that he must obey what he is told, he will become a spoiled, disobedient, barking nuisance to you and the neighborhood.
Of course, if you don't want to take the time to teach obedience to him, you can always hire a dog sitter to watch your dog whenever you leave home.
However, a much less expensive route is to teach your dog some simple obedience skills that will cure him of his barking, whining ways.
