Correcting Minor Errors

• While the length of time varies by state, all states allow minor corrections to be made to a birth certificate within a certain amount of time after the birth occurs. After this time has elapsed, a fee is required for birth certificate correction.
  
  Minor errors on a birth certificate, such as misspellings of the first and last name, can be corrected simply by visiting a courthouse in the state where the birth occurred. Corrections can also be made by downloading a Birth Certificate Amendment Form, filling it out and attaching any required documentation, and mailing it in or filing it in person at the courthouse.
  
  Keep in mind that to correct errors or misspellings of the parent's names, or their vital information, a copy of their birth certificate, driver's license or other document proving their identity must be included with the amendment form.
  
  

Changing VItal Information

• Changing a birth certificate is a more lengthy process then correcting one. In order to completely change the first, last or middle name of the person listed on the birth certificate, change the parent's names or add or remove a parent's name, you must fill out all the required forms pertaining to the change and pay all necessary fees to petition the Superior Court for the change(s).
  
  

Issuance Of A New or Amended Birth Certificate

• Some states will issue a new copy of the birth certificate once the corrections and/or changes have been made, and seal the old one for records purposes. Some states will simply amend the existing records and may or may not provide a new copy automatically. In any case, you can always request a new copy for your own records.
  
  

U.S. Citizens Born Outside the United States

• U.S. citizens born abroad can request corrections and changes through the U.S. State Department. Depending on the country where the birth occurred, the forms required can vary, so it is best to contact the State Department for more information.
  
  

Other Issues

• Remember that each state has slightly different rules and fees associated with correcting or changing a birth certificate. Don't assume that you can fill out a Birth Certificate Amendment form without petitioning the court for a change if you haven't taken the time to familiarize yourself with the rules for your state. Doing your research in advance will save you both time and money in the long run.
