  One of the most basic drapery decor approaches is having two layers of drapes, each of which can open separately. Classic styles include the sheer under curtains with a denser set of drapes over them. Alternative approaches include a rod that is merely wrapped or swagged with one or more fabrics, floor-length sets that line a wall, or matched drape pairs covering each window with side ties to hold them back.
  
  

Add-Ons

  Beads, crystals, bamboo and other items can be strung together as a style of drape itself. These can be hung separately or added on to existing drapes, such as an overlay for a set of sheers. Side-tie decorations can be subtle or bold. Look for broad brocades or colored tassels that match the drapes, or provide two or three more slender side ties in a vertical row along each side of the curtain.
  
  

Off-Balance and Options

  You can drape walls without windows, hang drapes over or around beds or twist a pair of different colored sheers to wrap around large furniture. Drapes in windows can be staged for an off-balanced appearance, such as when you place a window scarf higher on one side than the other. Play and experiment with scarves for different rooms. You can place them along side other drapes, even those balanced at a window, but the off-kilter scarf will add visual interest.
  
  

Formalities

  Some homes simply demand a formal look and may include three layers of drapery. One such look uses a sheer beneath, then a full set of heavier drapes over them and valances above. Color and fabric density is an important consideration in very formal settings. Find inspiration from Victorian theaters with fancy stage curtains or famous palatial homes.
