Instructions on How to Stop Your Dog From Biting
- 1). Socialize your puppy while he is young. Bring him to the park and similar places often so he can meet other dogs and people. If he learns early not to fear common situations, he will not become frightened often.
- 2). Ask your vet to neuter or spay your dog. Dogs who have been spayed or neutered are less likely to bite humans or other animals, according to the Humane Society.
- 3). Train your dog not to bite when he is young. Dogs like to explore with their mouths and they often bite in a play. Do not encourage play-biting, as your dog will think that this behavior is appropriate. Discourage biting by yelping loudly in a high-pitched voice as soon as he bites you. Refuse to play with him for a few minutes. If he bites you again, repeat these steps.
- 4). Shake your puppy or young dog by the scruff of the neck if he continues to bite. Scold him in a low, "growly" voice.
- 5). Bring your dog to an obedience class. Work with him to teach him that biting is unacceptable. Curb your dog's biting before he causes harm to someone, whether he intends to or not.
