In-home care services are for those individuals who need assistance with the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) but do not want to leave their home for assisted living. It includes both professional and informal support networks such as trained home care staff as well as family, friends and neighbors. It helps to reduce the load on the family and still allow them to observe their loved ones from close quarters.

It must be kept in mind that there are two distinctive home care facilities: Home Health Care and Non-Medical In-Home Care. Home health care requires a licensed medical professional such as a nurse or a physical therapist for providing home care facilities. Services such as medication administration, occupational therapy, wound dressing and care, mobility training, pain management and IV therapy/injections require the presence of a medical professional and hence, they can only be performed under home health care.

Non-medical in-home care provides help to seniors with daily activities so as to ensure their safety and good health. The staff of non-medical in-home care generally does not have a medical license. It is mostly not covered by insurance or public funds and the individual has to pay for these services from his/her own funds. Sometimes if needed, non-medical in-home care services can provide medical services as well.

Home care facilities differ in many ways from facility-based services and both have their sets of merits and demerits. There are different kinds of senior housing options like nursing homes, assisted living, adult day care, and retirement community or continuing care retirement community. There are some well-reputed elder care facilities in the Montclair, New Jersey that also provide excellent in-home care services to seniors. In-home care services provide personal care services and companionship services. Personal care services include basic ADLs such bathing, grooming, and hygiene. Mobility assistance, transferring & positioning, toilet assistance, incontinence care, feeding and giving prescribed diets are also included in the personal care services. In Montclair, New Jersey area, some elder care companies provide both personal care services and companionship services as a single in-home care service while other companies may see them as two separate services.

These companionship services include transportation assistance, help with reading, engaging seniors in mental activities, maintaining day-to-day schedule, light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, running errands, medication reminders, help with grooming etc.
