How to Install an Antivirus or Spyware Program
- 1). Ensure that your computer meets the system requirements for the antivirus program. Right-click "My Computer." Go down to "Properties." View the basic computer information under the "System" section. Look on the back of the antivirus program package for the system requirements. If you download antivirus software from the Internet, check for the system requirements on the website before you begin.
- 2). Close any programs that are not being used. Place the antivirus program disc into the computer's CD-ROM. Note the serial number on the antivirus disc sleeve or the actual disc. Ensure to keep up with the serial number, because you may need it again. Wait for the disc to automatically run. If it does not automatically start, press "My Computer" and double click the CD-ROM icon.
- 3). Read the terms of the software agreement. Press "Yes" to begin the antivirus setup installation. Choose to install the program in the "Program Files" folder. Follow the on-screen prompts until the installation is complete. Change the settings of the antivirus program to your preference. Ensure that the antivirus is active by checking the tray icons.
- 4). Reboot the computer into safe mode. This is crucial because spyware and viruses are inactive under safe mode. Scan the entire hard drive for any viruses or infections. Quarantine or remove the infections the program finds. Reboot the computer into normal mode. Begin using your computer.
