How to Obtain a Ceritifcate of Citizenship

16
    • 1). Download the Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship. Complete the form by typing your responses or printing neatly with black ink. Answer all of the required questions. Use "N/A" if the answer does not apply and "None" if your response is none.

If you run out of space in allotted section, attach another sheet to the back of the application. Write your name and alien registration number, if applicable, on each sheet. Indicate the number of the item you are responding to and write your response. Sign and date each additional sheet.

    • 2). Gather the documentation you must submit with your application. Have a passport-style photo taken. Request two copies of this photo. Use a soft lead pencil to print your name and alien registration number, if you have one, in the center of the back of both of each photo.

    • 3). Obtain a check or money order in the amount of $600, effective as of November 2010. The payment must be drawn on a financial institution in the United States and payable in U.S. currency. Make the item payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. However, if you live in Guam, make it payable to Treasurer Guam; if you live in the U.S. Virgin Islands, make it payable to Commissioner of Finance Virgin Islands; if you live anywhere else outside of the United States, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for payment instructions.

There are some exceptions to the $600 filing fee. U.S. citizen parents applying on behalf of an adopted child pay a $550 fee. Veterans and members of the U.S. military are exempt from paying a filing fee provided they proof of service.

    • 4). Access the USCIS Service and Office Locator web page. Use the locator to find the USCIS field office for your area. Place your supporting documents, photos and fee payment in the envelope. Affix appropriate postage and mail the envelope to the area field office.

You will receive written notification of the decision regarding your application in the mail. If your application is accepted, you will be issued a Certificate of Citizenship.
