How to Sew a Table Cover
- 1). Measure the length and width of the rectangle table with measuring tape. Calculate its dimensions by adding in the drop length which should be 1/2 inch above the floor. Choose a fabric according to the tables' dimensions. Make sure that it is wide enough to be sewn in one piece.
- 2). Iron out any wrinkles. Pull out the long thread piece inside the fabric's edges from the crosswise grain only on loosely woven fabric (like linen). Notice that the missing thread will leave a line for you to cut. Measure a rectangle corresponding to the table's measurements. Cut out the rectangle with a pair of sharp shears along the grain, not against it.
- 3). Fold the fabric corners diagonally to the point where the creases intersect. Press firmly on each corner to flatten out material. Trim off each corner where it crosses the fold-lines. Secure corners down in place with a drop of fabric glue stick.
- 4). Prepare the double hem. Refold the cloth's edges to the 2 inch folding line previously made before and press on it firmly. Fold the fabric up again to enclose its raw edge, forming 1 inch double folded hem.
- 5). Pin the hem with pins perpendicular to the fold. Place the cloth underneath the sewing machine's presser foot. Position the machine's presser foot too allow the needle to enter the fabric just close enough to the inside the inner edge. Stitch around the inner fold lines as close as possible to the fabric's inner hem.
- 6). Stop sewing when the needle reaches the corners. Turn the table cover over to precede sewing on the other side. Overlap the stitch 1/2 inch when meet up at the point where you first began sewing.
- 7). Remove the table cover off from the machine. Snip off any extra threads your shears. Apply the table cover onto the table.
