Garden chores are pretty much the same across the USDA Zones.
Warmer climates are still ahead of the game, shifting into a transition period northern gardeners don't experience.
But crops are still growing, insects are still feasting and, despite the growing heat and humidity, this is not the time to rest.
So start (or refuel) your gardening engines and choose a few tasks from June's to do gardening list.
Now is a wonderful time to side dress with manure, compost or worm castings.
Just don't smother your plants by dressing too closely.
Remember feeding the soil is the very best way to improve your garden results! (Note: If you are a desert gardener, go slow on fertilizing your plants.
New rapid growth is vulnerable to heat and you may do more harm than good.
) Garden chores are easier to do when the temperatures are cool and the sun is low.
Try getting up a bit earlier and to start at first light, or make your weeding a sunset chore.
If you grow them, and here is Zone 8 almost everybody does, the daylilies are getting ready to provide their spectacular show.
But, maybe they aren't in the right place.
No problem! Now is the time to move daylilies.
You can do it now or even when they are in bloom.
They can be moved or divided at any time unlike most other perennials.
Now is also a time to "buy a slug a beer".
It turns out that slugs are alcoholics! You can take advantage of this vice by filling a couple of pie tins with beer.
Slugs aren't fussy so cheap beer works just as well as the more expensive brands.
Put the tins out at night, just before bedtime.
In the morning you will find slugs have crawled into the tins and drowned.
This is much more efficient than running around at night with a salt cellar and a flashlight.
