How to Grow Cherry Trees in Israel
- 1). Choose a location for Surinam or Barbados cherry seedlings that receives full sun all day. No soil amendment should be necessary, because both will thrive in Israel's sandy soil.
- 2). Dig a hole for the cherry seedling twice the width and depth of its root ball. Fill a bucket with water and pour half of it in the hole. If it does not drain quickly, dig the hole deeper and wider and add sand for drainage. Place the seedling in the hole and fill around it, tamping the soil down to eliminate air spaces around the roots. Water thoroughly for the next three weeks while the roots establish.
- 3). After three weeks, reduce the watering to once a week. Both varieties will quickly develop deep roots that will sustain them in periods of drought.
- 4). Prune away dead or damaged limbs as you see them. Otherwise, no pruning is necessary to encourage growth or fruiting of Surinam and Barbados cherry trees. Fertilize quarterly to increase fruit production.
- 5). Watch for fruit to develop when the trees are two to five years old. Increase watering when fruit begins to develop, and you'll get larger, sweeter fruit.
