How to Apply for a Reentry Permit as a Resident Alien
- 1). Determine whether you are eligible. Re-entry permits are only available for lawful permanent residents and conditional residents.
- 2). Determine whether you need a re-entry permit. Re-entry permits are for those who will be outside the U.S. for a year or more (but less than two years).
- 3). Fill out Form I-131. You will need to provide basic information about yourself, your preferred contact information, information about your U.S. residency, information about your prior travel and information about your current travel plans. You will also need to sign the form under penalty of perjury.
- 4). Assemble the required evidence. You will need a copy of an acceptable photo identification document (a driver's license, passport or permanent resident card), a copy of the front and back of your Form I-551 and a copy of either your 1) Form I-797, 2) Notice of Action, 3) approval notice of request for replacement of your Form I-551, or 4) temporary evidence of permanent residency.
- 5). Pay the required fee. The current fee for filing your application is $360. Additionally, a $85 biometric fee is required if you are 14 to 79 years old.
- 6). Submit your application. Mail your completed Form I-131, your required evidence and your required fee to the appropriate lockbox. If you live in the Western United States, mail your application to USCIS; P.O. Box 21281; Phoenix, AZ 85036. If you live in the Eastern United States, mail your application to USCIS; P.O. Box 660867; Dallas, TX 75266.
- 7). Appear for your biometric appointment. USCIS will inform you in writing of the date and time of your appointment. You must appear at this date and time.
