How to Rewind the Rope on a Poulan Chainsaw
- 1). Remove the four Phillips screws holding the starter cover in place with the screwdriver. Set the screws aside in a safe place, and remove the starter cover.
- 2). Flip the starter cover over, and look to the center of the rope's pulley for the locking tab. This locking tab keeps the rope tensioned against the recoil spring. Use the screwdriver to pop this tab into the open position.
- 3). Unwind the rope all the way out, but don't remove it from the pulley. Push the locking tab back down to reset the tension on the rope.
- 4). Wind the rope all the way back onto the pulley. Hold the starter cover in one hand, and with the other, pull the starter handle so the pulley makes two full rotations, which will set the tension on the recoil spring, and the rope should retract back.
- 5). Repeat pulling the rope out two full rotations if the recoil spring isn't set. If on the second or third attempt tension isn't set, check that the locking tab is properly secured. If tension still can't be set, replace the recoil spring.
- 6). Place the starter cover over the starter housing area, and retighten the screws.
