China and CO2 Considered
Many believed that if the US had decided to go with the Kyoto Treaty that it would have been economic suicide at the time.
I happen to be one of those many people and after researching the numbers, I agreed it would have been devastating for our US Economy, at a time when we had no business doing anything else that might hurt us financially at the bottom of one of those notorious business cycles.
It seems emerging nations like India and China feel the same way, although realize they will have to cut their pollution at some time, so they are working into a plan and for now doing what they can.
In a Wall Street Journal article on May 8, 2010 entitled; "China Acts to Raise Profile on Climate Change" by Shai Oster told the story of image and brand building for China, a nation which wants respect and notoriety on the world stage for being technologically advanced.
Also we note that China is hosting the Shanghai World Fair right now, where all nations and large corporations seem to be strutting their stuff and showing off their innovations.
But it should also be known that China is building Coal-Fired power plants as fast as it can, and they have been for quite a while.
Only a couple of the most recent are clean-coal fired plants, most are not.
For China to claim that it is a leader in reducing carbon emissions is complete nonsense, but it sure makes great headlines for the Wall Street Journal's Weekend Edition, and Asian version of the paper, enough to make any Chinese national proud for a job well done.
Now to give China her due, she is spending a lot of money alternative energy for new plants, such as wind, solar, nuclear, and clean coal.
Unfortunately, her many hydro-electric plants have also dammed up the main rivers which is causing a bit of a stir down river.
Namely, there is not much water left, especially during drought years and off-season, worse, when she seeds the clouds they have massive flooding in areas prone to such challenges already.
China puts out more CO2 than any other nation in the world, so even though she can claim to be spending more on alternative energy projects, her carbon footprint is increasing not decreasing, which is problematic and it has caught the ire of the rest of the world.
And, this could be a challenge in the future as the EU, US, Japan, and other nations put forth tariffs to compensate for this pollution - a carbon cost add-on if you will.
China asserts that when it makes products for export, those CO2 emissions really belong to the nations who will be receiving the goods.
However, this is also a fallacy because it is China who is reaping the rewards of the profits, jobs, trade surpluses, and monetary flows.
Please consider all this.
