What is the Right Time to Wean Your Baby From the Bottle?

Once your baby is eating by themselves more often, it is a natural time to introduce them to drinking from a cup. Give them a trainer cup that has two handles and aweaning from the bottle snap-on lid with a spout. The key is to reduce messes as they learn to hold (and more than likely throw) the cup.

At first, fill the cup with water and give it to them at one meal a day. Show them how to hold and tip it for a drink. Dont be discouraged if your child doesnt catch on immediately. Weaning from the bottle may take up to six months before they are ready to take all their fluids from a cup.

Is My Baby Ready?

Here are some signals:

Mouthing the nipple without sucking
Trying to slide off your lap before the feeding is finished
Looking around while nursing or taking the bottle

When Should I Wean My Baby From the Bottle?

Weaning will not place overnight! Again, six months can pass before our baby will take all their fluids from a cup. Even so, the process usually needs to begin around eight to twelve months depending on each babys readiness.

Wean My Baby From the Bottle "How To"

There is no scientific formula, but many sources, including my own personal experience lean toward what Im about to describe. First, you will probably find it easier to substitute a cup for the bottle or breast at the midday feeding. Once adjusted, try doing the same during the morning. The bedtime feeding should be done last. Your baby has become used to the source of comfort at night, and it will take them some time before they are ready to give it up. If they are sleeping through the night (not waking up hungry), they dont need it physically. Break the nighttime habit in states. Substitute water for the milk, then switch the bottle for a cup.

Prolonged Bottle Feeding Issues

The bottle will become a security object, particularly if kept beyond age one. Dont let your baby carry or drink from the bottle while playing. Only allow the use of the bottle when they are sitting down or being held. All other times, give them a cup. If you dont allow them to take the bottle along with them, they wont know that it is an option. But most importantly, dont give in once you have made the decision to wean your baby from the bottle!
