How to Catch Snakes
- 1). Identify areas where snakes are commonly found. Search places where you've seen snakes before; under rocks and logs, in gardens and high grass, near creek beds and around debris piles. Different snakes live in different areas. Knowing the type of snake you want to catch will help to narrow down where that specific type of snake lives.
- 2). Purchase a snake tong. Snake tongs make it easy to catch and control snakes safely and from long distances. Most snake tongs are 40 inches long; some larger versions are 52 inches long. Both types work well Make sure the snake tongs have an easy to squeeze handle, which closes the end of the tongs and makes picking up snakes possible. The best place to purchase snake tongs is online at websites such as Amazon.com. Snake tongs may also be available at your local pet and hardware stores.
- 3). Capture a snake by squeezing the snake tongs around the snake's body. Don't grab the snake behind the head with snake tongs; it can cause the animal serve pain and create a struggle. Large snakes should be grabbed 1/3 of the way down the body. Small snakes can be grabbed in the lower third of the body, as long as the head and upper part of the body can't reach the handle. Don't squeeze the tongs closed too hard and slowly pick up the snake. Don't lift the snake off the ground for more than a few seconds. Use a slight lifting and dragging method to move the snake.
- 4). Move the snake bag near the snake. Snake bags have a triangular-shaped opening and a handle so that the person holding the bag can maintain a proper distance from the snake. Snake bags have lock and release mechanisms for locking the snake into the bag and releasing it into the wild. A large trash can with a secure top also works well for storing snakes.
- 5). Use a snake hook if snake tongs aren't available. A snake hook is basically a long metal stick with a sharp, pointy hook at the end. Don't stab the snake with the hook; use the hook to scoop up the snake and move it to a container. Hooks work best on large, big-bodied snakes. Aim for the middle of the snake and slowly move the hook once the snake is hooked.
- 6). Relocate the snake to a safe place, or dispose of the snake in a proper manner. Be careful when releasing the snake; the snake may be irritated and strike back.
