Do-It-Yourself Projects: Decorating a Girl's Room
- 1). Have your child list her interests and use this to come up with a room theme. Some theme ideas are dogs, movies, flowers, the beach and dance.
- 2). The theme you could should provide ideas on a color scheme. Choose two or three colors that look good together. Don't feel like you have to use pink or purple. Make sure your daughter's favorite colors will be among those used.
- 3). Visit a paint shop and look through the swatches. Paint the walls one of the theme colors, preferably in a light, pleasant shade. If you want to add more flair to the walls, cut out stencils into fun shapes and paint them onto the wall using one of the other theme colors. Do the painting together, its part of the bonding and the fun of creating a room.
- 4). Look for bedding, or fabric to sew into bedding, to match the theme as closely as possible. The bed is a focal point in the room, so make sure you find something she likes. There is a wide selection of comforter sets and fabric to match a variety of themes. Look for sheets that work with the comforter, mixing colors or patterns when appropriate.
- 5). Make curtains out of a fabric in one of your chosen colors. Look for fabrics with interesting textures such as sequins, chiffon, or velvet to add extra pop. These can be valances or full curtains, depending on the light in the room. You can also trim these to make them match pillows, bedding or other elements in the room
- 6). Select throw pillows in several colors to tie together the color scheme and embellish them with complementing design elements such as tassels, sequins, and patches. Or buy fabric and pillow forms and create your own.
- 7). Have your daughter provide wall decor by creating drawings or paintings that match the theme. Frame them in colored frames, or plain frames with colored mats, and hang them around the room.
