A Review of Twitter: Is Twitter Still Important?
Twitter seems like it has been forgotten, even from a few months ago when news media and every website had "Follow Us On Twitter" badges all over their sites.
In fact, although Facebook has recently become the fastest growing social media website, Twitter still ranks #1 when it comes to Follower Feeds.
Simply put, interested followers on Twitter are more useful than 5000 FB friends, simply because the followers on Twitter are more interested in what you have to say on a day to day, and even moment to moment basis.
In 2009, Twitter ranked around #12 in the traffic world.
Today, as I write this, it ranks at #9.
This is a significant jump for a website that already gets millions of hits per day.
It shows, beyond a doubt, that Twitter is still rising and growing.
As with any website that relies on person to person interactions and personal messages, Twitter can be and is misused.
Spammers still do their thing, plying us with messages that are blatant advertisements and contain no useful information.
Numerous tweets are ramblings, incoherent, or just outright crazy.
Amidst all of this, however, are quick and timely bits of useful information that anyone can see without having to be friend, or even an acquaintance.
This makes Twitter more useful as a news feed than any other social media site.
Of course Twitter does have a few flaws that are part of the territory, payment for the privilege of using it, so to speak.
The biggest is the speed of the feed.
An average Tweet can be on the site for as little as ten or fifteen seconds before the thousands of tweets that come after it shove it off.
The second issue is that ridiculously short 140 character feed.
In word terms, that is about 28 words (five characters per word), not including spaces.
If we add in punctuation, spaces, and a URL, we are down to about fifteen words.
I would like to see it expanded to 155 characters, myself, but dream we all must do.
Overall, even with its simple flaws, Twitter is both highly useful, and a great deal of fun.
Where else can we read the ramblings, mental wanderings, and outright wisdom of a hundred souls in less than three minutes? Facebook may have the friendship game sewn up, but Twitter definitely ranks number one in the "Timely News Short Feed" category.
