Instructions for a Nasal Dilator
- The internal nasal dilator is a U-shaped device with pads on each end that face outward or may be somewhat cone-shaped. Insert the dilator into each nostril with the narrowest end going in first. The pads (or wider area) should be just inside the nostrils.
According to the Breathe-Aide website, the nasal dilator is kept in place by the pressure between the nasal walls and the dilator itself. The dilator must fit tightly but comfortably. A loose dilator will probably fall out. The pressure from the dilator will push the nostrils out, allowing more room for airflow even if congestion exists. Some dilators come medicated with decongestant aids for inhalation to further improve breathing.
To remove the nasal dilator, simply grasp the end of the device at the nostril opening and gently pull out of your nose. - Another type of nasal dilator is an external adhesive device called a nasal strip. The first, and most well-known, type of nasal strip is the one made by Breathe Right. This product and others like it use a stiff, adhesive band that is fitted to the outside of the nose to pull open airways to accomplish the same feat as the internal device with more comfort.
Choose the appropriate size to fit your nose. The products often come in small, medium and large sizes. Wash and dry your nose, remove the backing from the adhesive side of the strip and position it across the nose in the area between the bony area of the upper nose and the widest part of the nose at the bottom. For most people this will be about midway between the top and bottom. Smooth out the strip and press down to ensure proper adhesion. When you let it go, you should feel the nasal passages pull open.
When you are ready to remove the nasal strip, wash your face with warm water, being sure to saturate the nasal strip. Gently lift the ends of the strip away from the sides of your nose, pull it loose and throw it away. Some people may choose to use moisturizer or astringents to treat the skin where the strip was located.
