Federal, state and private grants are available to both law enforcement agencies and individual police officers. These grants range from firearms research and development grants from private groups like the National Rifle Association to housing grants offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. - Administered by the Disabled Police Officers of America (DPOA), the DPOA Educational Fund is designed to provide need-based financial assistance to disabled or retired officers. The selection committee takes into consideration the applicant's total household income--as well as her total expenses--before making an award decision.

According to the HUD, under this program, law enforcement, teachers, firefighters, emergency personnel and medical technicians are eligible to receive a 50 percent discount on the list price of the home. In return, the grant recipient must reside in the property for at least three years.

According to the HUD, "public safety improves when police officers live in a neighborhood." This grant aims to strengthen and secure American communities by offering home-ownership incentives to local law enforcement.
An applicant must be a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer who is, as reported by HUD, "employed full-time by a Federal, state, county or municipal government; or a public or private college or university."
