Lighting Arts & Crafts

9
    • The lighting in a room can help to set a mood or to make tasks such as reading a book or putting together a puzzle possible. Light, however, can also be used to make craft projects that add to the holiday or everyday décor of a room. Make your own lighting arts and crafts projects to decorate the rooms in your home.

    Glass Block Light

    • Make a decorative lighting craft to use during the holidays or as a nightlight in a baby's nursery. Take a glass block with a pre-drilled hole in the bottom, which are at craft and home supply stores. Cut shapes and letters from different colors of vinyl using a craft knife. Draw the shapes and letters if you wish, or print off a picture to use as a stencil. Cut a Christmas tree or snowflake to make a decorative light for Christmas. Cut the letters of the baby's name from the vinyl if you are making a light for a nursery. Peel the paper backing off the vinyl shapes and letters. Attach the vinyl pieces to the front of the glass block. Thread a strand of Christmas lights in any color you like through the hole in the bottom of the glass block leaving the plug out of the block.

    Hanging Candle Lanterns

    • Create candle lanterns to hang around a patio or from tree branches to light an outdoor party. Take clean jars with a lip around the top of the jar. Recycled baby food and pickle jars are good examples of jars you can save from the trash for this project. Take a 2-foot length of 24-gauge wire and wrap the wire around the top of the jar three times, just below the lip. Wrap the long tail of the wire around the wire wrapped around the top of the jar twice. Loop the tail of the wire up and back down to make the handle of the lantern. Wrap the end of the tail two times around the wire wrapped around the top of the jar on the opposite side as you first wrapped it. Trim any excess wire. Place a tea candle inside the jar after hanging it.

    Tin Can Lantern

    • Create a festive candle lantern that you can set on the ground outdoors or on a countertop to decorate and light a space. Fill a clean tin can with water and place it in the freezer so the water can freeze. Once the water is frozen, take the can out of the freezer and place it on top of a towel on its side. Mark out a design that you would like to put on the front of the tin can, or you can free hand the design. Use a hammer and nail to outline the design with small holes punctured in the can. Be very careful when punching the holes in the can. Use warm water to melt the ice from inside the can. Fill the bottom inch of the can with a layer of sand. Place a few tea candles in the bottom of the can to light up the design you punched.
