2010 World Cup Cheap Flights

Destination Southern Africa is one of just three FIFA approved agencies selling World Cup tickets and tours from the US.

They have blocked seats with South African Airways from JFK - Johannesburg that they are selling for just $1365 round trip, (all taxes included) for June dates. They have also just announced special fares for July dates (in time for the semi-finals and final) for $1690 JFK-Johannesburg, round trip (all taxes included). If you book by May 5th, they have just released 3 packages, with flights, match tickets and hotel all included: 5 nights in Johannesburg, for the UK/US match, just $1995 pp. 10 nights, for just $3875 pp and 15 nights for just $4975 pp. Contact Destination Southern Africa for more information.
If you're traveling from the US, Lufthansa via Frankfurt is offering the cheapest fares as of March 2010. Round trips from either LAX or JFK are around $2200 all taxes included for World Cup dates. Emirates (via Dubai) were the cheapest out there for a while, but have upped their fares to over $2500. ASAP Tickets are showing decent fares for both international and domestic flights, and are worth a call.

From the UK, there are still fares for around US $1000 round-trip (without taxes) from London to Johannesburg, on Kenya Airways (perfect for a quick safari stop over as well) and on TAP via Lisbon. Check with Cheaptickets.com for the latest, they are my personal favorite booking engine.

Ticket sales in Germany have been slow, so check with the official tour operators there and see if they have any blocked seats that they need to get rid of.

2010 World Cup Budget Accommodation - Hostels, Tents, Campsites and Couchsurfing

Rumors of a massive shortfall of beds in South Africa during the World Cup have not really been well-founded, there are still budget options left out there for many World Cup dates. STA, the student travel agency still has room in all the major 2010 World Cup cities. Rates start at $26 per night. The Daily Telegraph has a good list of recommended hostels, that you can still book through the Hostel World web site. An excellent web site with budget and self-catering options for all the stadium cities is Sleeping Out.co.za. Just type in your dates, type of accommodation you're looking for and presto.
Some of the lowest prices for a bed in Johannesburg during the World Cup would have to be in the Tent City that will be set up in Waverley Stadium. All the details can be found here, beds cost around $50 per night. This would be a very fun option to really soak in the atmosphere with football fans from around the world. They provide buses to the matches and fan parks.

Camp sites are excellent in South Africa and there are plenty to choose from. You can also check into renting a camper van. Remember that it's winter in South Africa, so Johannesburg and stadiums north of the city in particular will get chilly at night.

Couch surfing is a good idea to check into, couchsurfing.org has more than 1700 listings in South Africa and there's bound to be some availability even during the World Cup. You could also try a home exchange web site, especially if you live in a country that South Africans like to visit.

Getting Around on a Budget During the 2010 World Cup

While flying from city to city is ideal and will save time, it's not the cheapest option. For that, you have to go by land.
Gap Adventures is selling some very reasonably priced 2010 World Cup Overland Tours that take you on the road between the major stadium, they also include accommodation and watching the matches at official Fan Parks.

Minibus taxis are the cheapest way to get around from the city to the stadiums and fan parks.

Renting a car is a good option to get from city to city within South Africa if you have two or more people in your party. Just make sure the hotel you book has a secure parking lot nearby. You could also check into renting a camper van, that way you have your accommodation and transport in one package.

If you do prefer flying, here's a list of domestic airlines in South Africa. There's a really good possibility that flights are not as busy as they thought and prices could well come down by April.
