How to Edit a Scanned Photo

2

    Crop, Enhance, Correct and Resize

    • 1). Crop the image using the crop tool or adjustable horizontal and vertical lines that frame the final image perimeter or outline. Crop to eliminate the scanned photo's rough or unfocused images or create a tighter look that emphasizes the subject. Magnify the cropped image to show more detail about problem areas requiring changes.

    • 2). Enhance the lighting, contrast and color balance by adjusting the sliding levels or entering a positive or negative number value. For example, in Adobe Photoshop Elements, the "Enhance" drop-down menu includes "Adjust Lighting" and "Adjust Color" controls.

    • 3). Remove dust or scratches by applying the "dust and scratches" tool, if available, or use Photoshop's smudge tool that softens or covers the contrasting edges. Apply the cloning or stamp tool to copy an undamaged area of the image over the flaw.

    • 4). Re-size the image to allow for transfer. An image size can be expressed as pixel dimensions, width and height, or as a document size measured in inches or centimeters. For example, Microsoft Office Picture Manager features a "Re-size" option with predefined formats, such as "Email - Small - 160 x 160 pixels." Re-sized images can transfer more quickly as an e-mail attachment, a detailed Web page image or a print.

    • 5). Save the manipulated image as a copy to keep the original image untouched. Name the saved file to distinguish it from the original image file.
