Heuchera Sanguinea Plants
- Coral bells (Heuchera sanguinea) are mat or clump-forming herbaceous perennials with origins in the American Southwest. Today, scores of cultivars exist; their variously green-marbled leaves and tiny flowers on thin stems lure hummingbirds to the mixed flower border or woodland garden. Coral bells grow best in moist but well-drained fertile soil that is close to neutral in pH. Partially sunny to dappled shade makes ideal light conditions. The plants are winter hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture
zones 3 through 8. - Tall-growing cultivars of this species of coral bells reach 24 inches or taller, as measured by the height of their flower stem tips during the early summertime blooming season. 'Apple Blossom' bears pale pink flowers, 'Coral Cloud' produces coral-red blossoms, 'Splenden' blooms are red and 'Scintillation' flowers are deep coral pink. 'Mother of Pearl' and 'Pearl Drops' both display white flowers tipped in pink, according to the "A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants."
- Cultivars that produce flower stems between 12 and 20 inches tall look more petite. Winds and heavy rains are less likely to bend the stems. Tiny pink flowers of various intensity develop on cultivars 'Brandon Pink,' 'Splish Splash' and 'Winfield Pink.' Red to cerise petals occur on selections 'Fairy Cups,' 'Firesprite,' 'Huntsman,' 'Pluie de Feu' and 'Red Spangles.' White flowers develop on cultivar 'Schneewittchen.'
- for those who prefer more ornately leaved plants, certain cultivars consistently develop mottled variegation. 'Cherry Splash' blooms rose red above its green leaves with white and gold markings. Frosty produces red flowers and silver and green variegated leaves. 'Northern Fire' also blooms red but bears more mottled, irregular blotches of silver and green on its foliage. Expect green with silvery white mottling on 'White Cloud,' which also produces white flowers. 'Taff's Joy' blooms pink above an attractive mass of green leaves smeared with creamy and pink hues. 'Snowfire' produces red flowers and green leaves streaked with buttery cream tints.
