How to Make a Peyote Fan
- 1). The 12 feathers should be straightened by running each quill individually over an exposed light bulb that has been turned on. Apply a steady, gentle pressure to the quill until you can bend into into the shape you desire. Use scissors to cut feathers until there is about 3 inches of black color remaining.
- 2). Layout the feathers in the shape you prefer from the outside in. The last feather you place should be the center feather. Use glue to bind the feathers together. Use a pencil to trace the outside of the base of the quills on a sheet of paper. The tracing will serve as a guide for the shape of the handle, which should be about 1/8-inch wider than the feathers.
- 3). Soft wood, such as white pine or cedar, can be used to make the handle. Use a coping saw to cut the hand in the shape of the pattern you traced. Sand the handle to smooth it.
- 4). Use the coping saw to cut a slot in the top of the handle into which the feathers will fit. Use glue to attach the feathers to the handle. Wrap cotton threads around the base of the handle in a pattern that you desire.
