Directions on How to Install a Soft Top on a '98 Jeep Wrangler
- 1). Park the Jeep in a flat area where you can set the parking brake and easily access the vehicle. Remove the old soft top and corresponding frame if your Jeep already has one by unsnapping the pieces of the frame after you remove the top. Unscrew/unbolt the hardtop if your Jeep is a hardtop-only. The screws/bolts are located around the inside perimeter of the top. Once this is done set everything to the side. Fold all of the seats down, both front and rear seats, to access the runners - the tracks that help keep the top in place. The tracks work their way around the inside of the vehicle on both sides.
- 2). Unbox the new frame for the soft top and remove all of the pieces. Check the manufacturer's included list to ensure all of the corresponding pieces of the frame kit are there. Unfasten the windows, remove them, and set them to the side for use later. Mount the metal frames onto the windshield and the rear runner (they will slide into place). Lock them into place and pull the soft top over the top of the frame. Slide the retainer bar through the fabric hole of the top at the front of the vehicle to lock it into place on the windshield runner.
- 3). Sit in the driver's seat and reach above your head to secure the top to the metal frame. Locate the snaps and gently secure them at the middle and rear of the vehicle, tugging on the soft top to reposition it if necessary. Attach the side and rear retainers by sliding the bars into place and zipping them shut.
- 4). Mount the new windows onto the side doors by sliding the metal pins on the underside of the window itself into the grommets on the door. Slide the final retainer bar into place to lock the window down and snap the soft top around the entire perimeter. Double check all of the snaps, zippers, and retainer bars to ensure they are locked into place.
